On a hill by the sea stood a little lighthouse. She was white with a red stripe, and she had a big round light on top. Every evening, when the sun went down, she switched on her light.

“Goodnight, boats,” she called, in her soft, creaky voice. The boats rocked gently on the water. “Goodnight, lighthouse,” they murmured. Their sails drooped and their ropes went slack.

“Goodnight, fish,” she called. Down below the waves, the fish tucked their fins in and closed their round eyes. “Goodnight, lighthouse,” they bubbled. Their scales shimmered in the silver light.

“Goodnight, gulls,” she called. The seagulls settled on the rocks with their heads under their wings. “Goodnight, lighthouse,” they cooed. One gull gave a tiny, sleepy hiccup.

“Goodnight, waves,” she called. The waves slowed down. Hush, they went, hush, hush, hush. They rolled up the sand and slipped back again, over and over, like a lullaby.

“Goodnight, stars,” she called. Above her, the stars twinkled one by one. “Goodnight, lighthouse,” they sang in their tiny, faraway voices. The Moon rose slowly, round and gold, and nodded hello.

The little lighthouse felt very sleepy. Her light turned round and round, sweeping across the dark water. Its beam was slow and steady, and it said, “All is well, all is well.”

She yawned a great, creaky yawn. “Goodnight, everyone,” she whispered. Her light kept turning, soft and gentle. And all along the shore, from the boats to the stars, the whole sea was fast asleep.
