🧭 Compass Directions

Read a compass arrow, then use eight directions and turns of 45°, 90° and 180° to find your way.

How to play

North is at the top of the compass. Going clockwise, the four main directions are north, east, south and west (try “Never Eat Soggy Waffles”, or make up your own). In-between directions join two names, like north-east. Clockwise turns follow the same way as clock hands.

⌨️ Keyboard: press 1–4 to pick an answer, or type your answer and press Enter.

What it teaches

Using compass directions and describing routes is a Year 3 Geography and Year 4 Mathematics skill, and turns in degrees build on angle work in Years 5–6. It is also the first step to reading real maps and orienteering.

Levels: Four ways (N, E, S, W) · Eight ways (Add NE, SE, SW, NW) · Turns (Turn by 45° to 270°)
