Using this page
Four-digit subtractions such as 6042 โ 2875 that need several trades in a row. They build accuracy with the standard written method, which Grade 4 in the Common Core expects children to use fluently and Australian students extend to larger numbers in the upper primary years. Suits around Year 4 and Year 5 in Australia and Grade 4 in the US (Common Core 4.NBT.B.4), but use whatever level fits the child.
Tips
- Keep sessions short: one sheet of 10 to 20 questions a day beats a long session once a week.
- Mark the sheet together with the answer key and talk about the mistakes; each one shows what to practise next.
- Move to the next sheet when a child gets almost every question right without counting on fingers.
- Where it is offered, use the column layout for written methods and the across layout for mental strategies.
Worked example
6042 โ 2875. Ones: 2 โ 5 needs a trade from the tens, so 4 tens becomes 3 and 12 โ 5 = 7. Tens: 3 โ 7 needs a trade, but the hundreds digit is 0, so trade from the thousands first: 6 thousands becomes 5 and the hundreds becomes 10, then 9, making 13 tens. 13 โ 7 = 6. Hundreds: 9 โ 8 = 1. Thousands: 5 โ 2 = 3. So 6042 โ 2875 = 3167.
Common mistakes
Losing track of several trades. Cross out and rewrite each changed digit clearly.
Forgetting that a column traded from has one less. Check by adding: 3167 + 2875 = 6042.

Ten to twenty is plenty for daily practice. The 100-question drill sheet is for short timed practice once or twice a week.

Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
