Adding and Subtracting Decimals Worksheets

Free printable adding and subtracting decimals worksheets with answer keys. Add and subtract decimals to tenths or hundredths, such as 4.75 + 2.6.

Using this page

Add and subtract decimals to tenths or hundredths, such as 4.75 + 2.6. The Common Core's Grade 5 standard covers operations with decimals to hundredths. The mixed option puts tenths and hundredths together, so children practise lining up the decimal points. In the column layout the points line up for them. Suits around Year 5 and Year 6 in Australia and Grade 5 in the US (Common Core 5.NBT.B.7), but use whatever level fits the child.

Tips

  • Line up the decimal points before adding or subtracting.
  • Estimate first: 4.75 + 2.6 is about 5 + 3 = 8, so 7.35 makes sense.
  • Use money as a model: $4.75 + $2.60.
  • Read decimals with place value: 0.35 is three tenths and five hundredths.

Worked example

4.75 + 2.6. Line up the points and fill the gap with a zero: 4.75 + 2.60. Hundredths: 5 + 0 = 5. Tenths: 7 + 6 = 13, write 3 and carry 1. Ones: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. So 4.75 + 2.6 = 7.35.

Common mistakes

Lining up the last digits instead of the decimal points, so 4.75 + 2.6 gives 5.01.

Leaving the decimal point out of the answer.

How to use this generator

Choose the options above the sheet: the number of questions and the settings for this kind of worksheet. Every change makes a new sheet straight away, and New worksheet gives a different set of questions with the same settings.

Each sheet has a worksheet number printed at the top. Type the same number later, or keep the page link, to print exactly the same questions and answer key again. Leave Answer key page ticked to print the answers on a second page, then press Print. Every printed page carries the makekite logo and web address.

Common questions

Why does the key show 7.3 rather than 7.30?
Zeros at the end of a decimal do not change its value, so the key writes the shortest form. Both are correct.

Can I start with easier numbers?
Yes. Choose tenths on the decimals sheet, or whole numbers on the powers of ten sheet, then move up.

Can I print the same worksheet again?
Yes. Note the worksheet number printed at the top, or keep the link in your browser's address bar, which ends with that number. Entering it later gives the same questions and answers.

Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere: the sheets are made in your browser.
