Shapes, Halves and Quarters: Grade 1 Study Guide
Shapes can be put together to make new shapes, and wholes can be shared into equal parts.
Grade 1 children describe shapes by their attributes: how many sides, how many corners, and whether the sides are straight or curved. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners, a rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners and a hexagon has 6 sides. A square is a special rectangle with four equal sides.
They also learn to compose shapes: two triangles can make a rectangle, and two half-circles make a circle. This early idea of building and taking apart shapes supports later geometry and fractions.
Defining attributes
A defining attribute is something that makes a shape what it is, such as 'three straight sides' for a triangle. A non-defining attribute, such as color or size, does not change the shape. A big red triangle and a small blue triangle are both triangles.
| Shape | Sides | Corners | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Triangle | 3 | 3 | Slice of pizza |
| Rectangle | 4 | 4 | Door |
| Square | 4 equal | 4 | Napkin |
| Hexagon | 6 | 6 | Honeycomb cell |
| Circle | 1 curved | 0 | Coin |
Putting shapes together
Use pattern blocks or paper shapes. Two squares can make a rectangle. Six triangles make a hexagon. A house picture can be made from a square and a triangle. Children can name the new shape and describe the smaller shapes they used.
Halves and quarters
To share a shape into 2 equal shares is to cut it into halves. To share into 4 equal shares is to cut it into fourths or quarters. Each share must be the same size. A half is one of two equal shares; a quarter is one of four. The more equal shares, the smaller each share is: a quarter of a pizza is smaller than a half.
Fold in half so the edges match.
You have 2 halves.
Fold it in half the other way.
4 quarters make the whole.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: A sandwich is cut into 2 equal parts. Each part is a half. Example: Two quarters make a half (2 of 4 equal shares). Common mistakes: thinking unequal parts are halves, and saying the 'fourth of the pizza' when the child is looking at only four pieces of different sizes. Remind them: equal shares only.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. 6 sides and 6 corners. 2. Draw a line down the middle and one across the middle so the four parts are the same size. 3. No. A half must be one of two equal shares.
