Plant and Animal Parts, Parents and Offspring: Grade 1 Study Guide

Plants and animals have parts that help them grow, find food and stay safe.

GRADE 1 · SCIENCEPlant and Animal Parts, Parents and Offspring🐦🌵🐟🌱

Every living thing has parts that do jobs. A bird's beak helps it eat, its wings help it fly and its feathers keep it warm. A fish has gills to breathe underwater and fins to swim. A plant has roots that take in water, a stem that holds it up and leaves that make food.

Young plants and animals look like their parents but not exactly. A puppy has the same body parts as a dog but is smaller. This is called inheritance, and it is why a kitten grows up to be a cat, never a dog.

How parts help survival

Different animals have different parts for different habitats. A polar bear's thick fur keeps it warm. A camel's wide feet stop it sinking in sand. A woodpecker's strong beak can drill into trees to find insects. If we compare two animals, we notice the parts that are the same (eyes, mouth) and different (wings or fins).

1
Pick an animal

A duck.

2
Look at its parts

Webbed feet, beak, feathers.

3
Match to jobs

Webbed feet help it swim.

4
Compare

How is it different from a chicken?

Parents and offspring

Many young animals look like small versions of their parents: puppies, kittens and baby ducks. Some young are very different at first, such as a tadpole and a frog. Plants also have offspring: an acorn grows into an oak tree. Offspring share features with their parents but are not exactly the same: siblings may have different colors or sizes.

💡 Pro Tip: Look at a family photo and list three features you share with your parents and one that is different.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: Why do cacti have spines? To protect themselves and reduce water loss. Example: What will a robin's egg become? A robin, not a sparrow. Common mistakes: thinking every offspring looks exactly like its parent, and thinking animals choose to grow a part when they need it. Body parts are inherited from parents over many generations.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Roots take in water and hold the plant in the soil. 2. Example: A bird's beak helps it eat. 3. Offspring inherit features from their parents, and kittens get theirs from cats.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Body parts have jobs that help a living thing survive.
  • Plants have roots, stems and leaves.
  • Young plants and animals are like their parents but not exactly alike.
  • Compare animals by their parts.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • What is the job of a plant's roots?
  • Name one animal body part and what it does.
  • Why does a kitten grow into a cat and not a dog?
