Tenses and Kinds of Sentences: Class 4 Study Guide

Tenses tell when something happens. Sentence types tell why we are speaking.

CLASS 4 · ENGLISHTenses and Kinds of Sentences🕰️📖✏️

Tense shows time. The simple present (I walk) shows habits and facts. The simple past (I walked) shows finished actions. The simple future (I will walk) shows what will happen. The continuous forms show an action in progress: I am walking, I was walking, I will be walking. The perfect forms link times: I have walked, I had walked.

There are four kinds of sentences: statements (tell), questions (ask), commands (instruct) and exclamations (express strong feeling).

Irregular verbs

Many common verbs change completely in the past: go → went → gone, eat → ate → eaten, write → wrote → written, see → saw → seen. Use the past form for the simple past (I went) and the past participle with 'have' (I have gone). Practise these in sentences.

Kinds of sentences

A statement ends with a full stop (The sky is blue.). A question ends with a question mark (Where are you going?). A command tells someone to do something (Close the door.). An exclamation ends with an exclamation mark (What a lovely day!).

Worked examples and common mistakes

Fix: Yesterday I go to the market. becomes Yesterday I went to the market. Identify: 'Please sit down.' is a command. Common mistakes: mixing tenses in one paragraph, using 'have went' instead of 'have gone', and forgetting the question mark. Check that every verb in a paragraph matches the time of the story.

💡 Pro Tip: Write a short diary entry in the past tense, then rewrite it in the future tense.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. ate, will eat. 2. She has gone home (or She went home). 3. Example: Open your book. What a beautiful rainbow!
