Area, Volume, Time and Temperature: Year 6 Study Guide

Measurement brings maths to jobs like building, cooking and travel planning.

YEAR 6 · MATHSArea, Volume, Time and Temperature📐🧊🌡️⏰

The area of a rectangle is length × width. The area of a parallelogram is base × perpendicular height. A triangle is half of a parallelogram, so its area is ½ × base × height. Remember: the height must be at right angles to the base.

Volume of a rectangular prism is length × width × height, in cubic units. Capacity is measured in millilitres and litres (1 cm³ = 1 mL, and 1000 cm³ = 1 L). Students also read time zones and temperature scales in °C, including negatives.

Formulas

Area of a rectangle: 3 rows of 6 = 18 squares
Count or multiply.
ShapeFormulaExample
Rectanglel × w8 × 5 = 40 m²
Parallelogramb × h10 × 4 = 40 cm²
Triangle½ × b × h½ × 6 × 5 = 15 cm²
Prism volumel × w × h4 × 3 × 2 = 24 cm³

Composite shapes

Split an L-shape into rectangles, find each area and add. Or find the area of the whole rectangle and subtract the missing part. A garden 12 m by 8 m with a 4 m by 3 m patio inside has a planting area of 96 − 12 = 84 m².

1
Split or subtract

Choose the easier way.

2
Find each area

Use the right formula.

3
Add or subtract

Combine.

4
Write square units

m², cm².

Time and temperature

Time problems often cross midnight or time zones. A flight leaves Sydney at 2140 and flies for 8 hours 20 minutes: it arrives at 0600 the next day. Temperatures can be negative: the change from −3 °C to 9 °C is 12 °C. Timetables, travel plans and weather charts use these skills.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: A triangle with base 10 cm and height 7 cm has an area of ½ × 10 × 7 = 35 cm². Common mistakes: using the slanted side as the height, forgetting the ½ for a triangle and writing cm instead of cm². Draw the perpendicular height as a dotted line.

💡 Pro Tip: Find the area of the floor of your room by splitting it into rectangles.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. 20 cm². 2. 60 cm³. 3. 15 °C.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Triangle area = ½ × base × height.
  • Volume = l × w × h.
  • 1 L = 1000 cm³.
  • Height is perpendicular to the base.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Find the area of a triangle with base 8 cm and height 5 cm.
  • Find the volume of a box 5 × 4 × 3 cm.
  • How much does the temperature change from −4 °C to 11 °C?
