In English

The mountain of light that Vishnu and Brahma could neither know nor see: you claim, 'We know him,' and speak only falsehoods. You with the mouth that drips milk and honey, deceitful one, open the door. The earth, the sky and all else cannot know him. He takes us as his own with his beautiful form and fondles us with grace. We sing of that kindness and cry, 'Shiva, Shiva!' Even so you do not wake, you do not wake. Girl with the fragrant hair, what kind of behaviour is this?

About this verse

This verse gently scolds a friend who says she knows the Lord but cannot be woken by the cry of his name. The line about the mountain of light recalls the story of Shiva appearing as a flame whose top and base Brahma and Vishnu could not find.
