Retirement savings calculator

See what your savings could grow to by retirement and how much yearly income that could pay, in today's dollars.

A rough planning tool. It assumes steady returns, contributions that rise with inflation, the balance is spent evenly down to zero at your plan age, and no tax, fees or Age Pension. Real returns vary and can be negative. Speak to a licensed financial adviser about your own situation.

How this calculator works

First the balance grows to retirement: balance = balance × (1 + return) + contribution, with contributions rising by inflation each year. That balance is converted to today's dollars. Then it is spent evenly over your retirement years using the real return in retirement (return adjusted for inflation), which is a standard annuity calculation.

Worked example: a 35-year-old with $80,000 saved and $12,000 added each year (rising with prices), earning 6.5% until 67, reaches about $2,190,000, or $993,600 in today's dollars. Spread over 23 years at a 4.5% return and 2.5% inflation, that pays about $52,997 a year in today's dollars. To reach $60,000 a year they would need to save about $2,185 more each year, rising with prices.
