Volume and the Coordinate Plane: Grade 5 Study Guide

Volume measures the space inside a solid. The coordinate plane gives every point an address.

GRADE 5 · MATHSVolume and the Coordinate Plane📦📍📐🧊

Volume is the amount of space inside a solid shape, measured in cubic units. A unit cube has a volume of 1 cubic unit. A rectangular prism that is 4 units long, 3 wide and 2 high is filled by 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 unit cubes. So volume = length × width × height, or volume = base area × height.

A coordinate plane is made of two perpendicular number lines, the x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical), which meet at the origin (0, 0). Every point is described by an ordered pair (x, y): move across first, then up.

Finding volume

One layer of 12 cubes (3 × 4); two layers hold 24
Volume is layers of the base.

Pack the prism with cubes layer by layer. Each layer has length × width cubes, and the number of layers is the height. Volume is additive: an L-shaped solid can be split into two prisms whose volumes are added. Units are cubic centimeters (cm³), cubic inches (in³) and so on.

Plotting points

To plot (3, 2), start at the origin, move 3 to the right and then 2 up. The first number is always the x-coordinate. Grade 5 uses the first quadrant, where both numbers are positive. Distances between points on the same horizontal or vertical line are found by subtraction: from (2, 5) to (7, 5) is 5 units.

1
Start at (0, 0)

The origin.

2
Move along x

Right by the first number.

3
Move along y

Up by the second number.

4
Mark the point

Label it.

Patterns on the plane

Graph two patterns that start at 0, such as 'add 2' and 'add 4', to see how the points rise. A relationship such as y = 2x gives points (0, 0), (1, 2), (2, 4), (3, 6) that fall on a straight line. Solve real-world problems by graphing: if a bike rental costs $2 per hour, the point (3, 6) means 3 hours cost $6.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: A fish tank 40 cm long, 20 cm wide and 25 cm high holds 40 × 20 × 25 = 20,000 cm³, which is 20 liters. Common mistakes: mixing up area (square units) and volume (cubic units), reading (x, y) in the wrong order and counting the grid lines instead of the spaces. Say 'run before you jump' to remember to go across first.

💡 Pro Tip: Fill a cereal box with sugar cubes or small blocks to see layers and volume.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. 120 cm³. 2. 4 units right of the origin and 1 unit up. 3. (5, 5).

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Volume = length × width × height.
  • Volume is in cubic units.
  • Ordered pairs go across first, then up.
  • Graphs show patterns and relationships.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Find the volume of a box 6 cm × 5 cm × 4 cm.
  • Where is (4, 1) on the plane?
  • A point is at (3, 5). Move it 2 units right. What are the new coordinates?
