Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs: Grade 3 Study Guide

Words do different jobs in a sentence. Knowing the jobs helps you write clearly and spot mistakes.

GRADE 3 · ENGLISHNouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs✏️📚🔤🗣

A noun names a person, place, thing or idea (teacher, park, kite, courage). A verb shows an action or a state of being (run, think, is). An adjective describes a noun (a tiny insect). An adverb describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb, and often tells how, when or where (she spoke softly).

Grade 3 standards ask you to explain what these words do and to use them correctly, including plural nouns, simple verb tenses and the difference between adjectives and adverbs.

The four jobs at a glance

Part of speechJobExample
NounNames somethingThe dog barked.
VerbShows action or beingThe dog barked.
AdjectiveDescribes a nounThe loud dog barked.
AdverbDescribes a verbThe dog barked loudly.

Plural nouns

Most nouns add -s (cat, cats). Add -es when the word ends in s, x, z, ch or sh (box, boxes; dish, dishes). If a word ends in a consonant plus y, change y to i and add -es (baby, babies). Some plurals are irregular and must be learned: child → children, mouse → mice, foot → feet, sheep → sheep.

Past, present and future

Verb tense shows when something happens. Regular verbs add -ed in the past (jump → jumped). Irregular verbs change form (go → went, eat → ate, run → ran). The future uses will (I will jump).

1
Present

She walks to school.

2
Past

She walked to school yesterday.

3
Future

She will walk to school tomorrow.

💡 Pro Tip: Many adverbs end in -ly, but not all (fast, well, often), and not every -ly word is an adverb (lovely and friendly are adjectives). Ask what the word describes.

Worked examples

Example 1. The sleepy puppy yawned loudly. Noun: puppy. Adjective: sleepy. Verb: yawned. Adverb: loudly.

Example 2. Correct the sentence: Yesterday I runned to the park. Run is irregular, so the past tense is ran.

Example 3. Fix the plural: The two babys played with their boxs. Change to babies and boxes.

Common mistakes

Some words change jobs depending on the sentence: light can be a noun (turn on the light), a verb (light a candle) or an adjective (a light bag). Always ask what the word is doing. Another mistake is using an adjective where an adverb is needed: say 'She sang beautifully', not 'She sang beautiful'.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Noun: firefighter. Adjective: brave. Verb: climbed. Adverb: quickly. 2. buses, berries, teeth, wishes. 3. Past: We played outside. Future: We will play outside.
