Writing an Opinion Paragraph: Grade 3 Study Guide
An opinion tells what you think. Good writers give reasons so the reader can agree with them.
An opinion is what you believe or feel about something, such as Dogs make the best pets. It is different from a fact, which can be proven. In an opinion paragraph, the writer introduces the topic, states an opinion, gives reasons that support it, and ends with a concluding sentence.
A paragraph can be built like a sandwich: the top bun is the opinion, the filling is the reasons and examples, and the bottom bun restates the opinion in new words.
The structure
| Part | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion sentence | Tells what you think | I believe our school should have a garden. |
| Reason 1 + example | Explains why | First, plants teach us about science. We could watch seeds grow. |
| Reason 2 + example | Adds support | Also, a garden gives us fresh vegetables for lunch. |
| Closing sentence | Wraps up | For these reasons, our school needs a garden. |
Linking words
Linking words connect your opinion to your reasons. Use because, since, for example, also, another reason, in addition and therefore. To begin, try I think, I believe or In my opinion. To finish, try For these reasons or That is why.
Writing it step by step
Choose a topic and write your opinion in one sentence.
List three reasons and pick the best two.
Write the opinion, reasons with examples, and a closing sentence.
Read aloud. Are there capital letters, end marks and a linking word in every reason?
A model paragraph
I believe every child should learn to swim. First, swimming keeps you safe near water. Knowing how to float and kick could save your life at a pool or beach. Also, swimming is great exercise because it uses your arms, legs and heart. For these reasons, every child should have swimming lessons. The writer states an opinion, gives two reasons, uses linking words (First, Also, For these reasons) and ends with a closing sentence.
Strengthen it: replace 'great' with a precise word, and add a real example such as 'my cousin learned at six and now helps others'.
Common mistakes
Writers often state a fact instead of an opinion, or they repeat the same reason in different words. Make each reason new. Others forget the closing sentence. Finally, check basic editing: a capital letter at the start of every sentence and an end mark at the finish. Reading your paragraph aloud will help you catch a missing word.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. It is an opinion, because people can disagree. You could support it with reasons such as the taste, the toppings and sharing it with friends. 2. Example: 'I think recess should be longer. First, we need time to run and be active. Also, we learn better after a break.' 3. Look for words such as first, also, because and for these reasons.
