Informational Text and Main Topic: Grade 2 Study Guide

Nonfiction books teach us facts. Readers use features such as headings and captions to find them.

GRADE 2 · ENGLISHInformational Text and Main Topic📖🐝🔍📚

An informational text gives facts about the real world. The main topic is what the whole text is about, such as 'honeybees'. Each paragraph may focus on a focus point, such as what bees eat. Key details are the facts that explain the topic.

Text features help readers navigate: title, heading, caption (words under a picture), bold words, glossary, table of contents and diagrams.

Text features and their jobs

FeatureWhat it tells you
Table of contentsWhere to find each section
HeadingWhat a section is about
CaptionWhat a photo shows
Bold wordAn important word, often in the glossary
DiagramHow parts fit together
IndexWhere to find a topic by page

Finding the main topic

Ask: What is this mostly about? What do most of the sentences tell me? In a paragraph like Honeybees live in hives. A hive may have 50,000 bees. Worker bees collect nectar. The queen lays eggs. the main topic is honeybees and their hive. The key details are the number of bees and the jobs of the workers and queen.

1
Read the title

Use it as a clue.

2
Read the headings

They show the focus of each part.

3
Find repeated words

Which idea comes up most?

4
State it in a few words

Honeybees and their hive.

Asking and answering questions

Use who, what, where, when, why and how. Point to the sentence or picture that gives the answer. Compare two texts on the same topic: what facts do both give, and which gives extra detail? Understanding why the author included a fact shows deeper reading.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: The caption says 'A monarch butterfly drinks nectar.' It tells us what the picture shows and a fact about what monarchs eat. Common mistakes: choosing a detail as the main topic (such as 'queen bees lay eggs' instead of 'bee hives'), skipping the captions and answering from memory instead of the text. Always go back to the text.

💡 Pro Tip: Read one short nonfiction article a week, and write the topic and three facts.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Words under a picture that explain what it shows. 2. Penguins: where they live, what they eat, how they raise chicks. 3. For example, a table of contents and a glossary.
