Habitats, Pollinators and How Plants Grow: Grade 2 Study Guide
Plants and animals depend on each other. A habitat is full of life.
Plants need sunlight and water to grow. In an investigation, a bean plant given light and water grows tall, but one kept in the dark turns pale and weak. This shows what plants need.
Some animals help plants. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds carry pollen from flower to flower, so plants can make seeds and fruit. Animals can also carry seeds, either in their fur or by eating fruit and dropping the seeds elsewhere.
How pollination works
It drinks nectar.
Fine yellow dust.
Pollen rubs off.
New plants can grow.
Seed dispersal
Seeds need to travel away from the parent plant to find space and light. Some seeds have wings or fluff and are carried by the wind (maple, dandelion). Some have hooks and stick to fur (burrs). Others are inside tasty fruit, and animals spread them. Water carries coconuts across the sea.
| Way of traveling | Example seed | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Wind | Dandelion, maple | Fluff or wings |
| Animal fur | Burr | Hooks |
| Eaten by animals | Berry | Sweet fruit |
| Water | Coconut | Floats |
Habitats are full of life
A habitat is where living things find food, water, shelter and space. A pond, a forest and a backyard are all habitats. There are many different kinds of plants and animals in one habitat, and in different habitats, different living things. Scientists count how many kinds they find in a small area and compare habitats.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: Why do flowers have bright colors? To attract pollinators. Example: How might a burr travel to a new place? On an animal's fur. Common mistakes: saying that bees only make honey (they also pollinate) and thinking plants get food from the soil like animals eat. Plants use sunlight to make their own food.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. Bees and butterflies. 2. The wind blows the fluffy seed away. 3. Sunlight, water and space to grow (and air).
