Nouns, Pronouns and Verbs: Class 3 Study Guide
Words are the building blocks of sentences. Knowing what each word does helps you write and speak correctly.
A noun is a naming word. It names a person (teacher), place (Jaipur), animal (tiger), thing (book) or idea (kindness). A pronoun takes the place of a noun so you do not have to repeat it: Ananya loves painting. She paints every day. A verb is a doing word. It tells what someone or something does: run, eat, sleep, sing.
In Class 3 you also learn to use the right words for singular and plural, to choose the correct tense, and to build longer sentences.
Kinds of nouns
| Kind | What it names | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Common noun | Any person, place or thing | boy, city, river |
| Proper noun | A particular name; starts with a capital letter | Ravi, Kolkata, Ganga |
| Collective noun | A group | a team of players, a herd of cows, a bunch of keys |
| Abstract noun | Something you cannot touch | happiness, bravery |
Pronouns
Pronouns include I, you, he, she, it, we, they and also me, him, her, us, them. Use he for a boy, she for a girl, it for a thing or animal and they for more than one. Example: Rahul and Sita went to the market. They bought fruit. Pronouns make writing smoother.
Verbs and tenses
Verbs change to show time. The present tense tells what is happening now (She plays). The past tense tells what has already happened (She played). The future tense tells what will happen (She will play). Many past tenses add -ed, but some verbs are irregular: go → went, eat → ate, see → saw.
Which word shows the action?
Now, before or later?
play, played or will play.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Underline the nouns: The girl gave a flower to her teacher. Replace with a pronoun: Meera is tall. She is tall. A common mistake is to write 'I goed' instead of 'I went'. Another is to forget capital letters for proper nouns like names of people, cities and festivals (Diwali, Holi, Mumbai). Read your sentence aloud to hear mistakes.
