Area, Volume, Capacity and Time Zones: Year 5 Study Guide
Measurement connects mathematics to real jobs such as building, cooking and travel.
The area of a rectangle is length × width, in square units such as m² or cm². Volume is the space an object takes up, measured in cubic units (cm³, m³). A prism 5 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm is filled by 30 centimetre cubes. Capacity is how much a container holds, in millilitres (mL) and litres (L). 1 L = 1000 mL, and a 1 cm³ cube holds 1 mL, so 1000 cm³ = 1 L.
Australia has three main time zones: Eastern (AEST), Central and Western. Time zones and 24-hour time appear in timetables and travel.
Area and volume formulas
| Measure | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Area of rectangle | length × width | 8 m × 5 m = 40 m² |
| Volume of prism | length × width × height | 5 × 3 × 2 = 30 cm³ |
| Capacity | 1000 cm³ = 1 L | a 20 cm cube holds 8 L |
Units of capacity and mass
Convert by multiplying or dividing by 1000. 2.5 L = 2500 mL. 3500 g = 3.5 kg. 2.4 t = 2400 kg. Use litres for a bath, millilitres for a medicine dose and kilograms for a bag of flour. Check that the answer is sensible: a 'cup' of 250 mL is a quarter of a litre.
From L to mL?
Multiply by 1000.
Divide by 1000.
Is the size sensible?
Time zones and 24-hour time
When it is 3:00 pm in Sydney (AEST), it is 2:30 pm in Adelaide and 1:00 pm in Perth, during standard time. Daylight saving changes the times in some states from October to April. A flight leaving Melbourne at 0815 and flying for 3 hours 30 minutes to Perth arrives at 1145 Melbourne time, which is 0845 in Perth. Convert carefully and say which time zone you are using.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Example: A tank 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm has a volume of 60 000 cm³, so it holds 60 L. Common mistakes: mixing up area and volume units, forgetting to convert to the same unit first and making errors across the hour when subtracting times. Use a timeline to count on.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. 84 m². 2. 3200 mL. 3. 2120 (9:20 pm).
✨ Key Takeaways
- Area is in square units; volume in cubic units.
- 1 L = 1000 mL = 1000 cm³.
- Use the same units before calculating.
