The Worm Who Wiggled Home
A small adventure about finding the way home.
Winnie was a small pink worm who lived in a garden bed full of rich, dark soil. She loved wiggling under the lettuce and nibbling at old leaves. It was a very good home.
One night, it rained and rained. The soil got so wet that Winnie floated up to the surface. When she woke, she was on a hard grey path. “Oh, my,” she said. “Where is my garden?”
The path was dry and warm in the sun, and Winnie’s skin began to feel tight. She had to get back into the soil, and quickly. She wiggled forward, one end and then the other.
A beetle trundled by. “Are you lost?” he asked. “I am,” said Winnie. “I need to find the lettuce patch.” The beetle pointed his feelers. “It is that way, past the big pot.”
Winnie wiggled on. A sparrow hopped close, and tilted her head, but she was a kind sparrow who only wanted to help. “You need to be quick,” she chirped. “There is shade by the wall.”
A little girl named Eva crouched down and gently picked up Winnie on a wet leaf. “Poor worm,” she said. “I will take you home.” She carried her across the path to the garden bed and set her in the cool, damp soil.
Winnie sank into the earth with a happy sigh. The soil felt like a soft blanket. “Thank you,” she called, though Eva could not hear. Eva smiled anyway, as if she had.
That evening, Winnie curled up under the lettuce. “I will not go far when it rains,” she told herself. But she was grateful for the beetle, the sparrow and the girl who had helped her wiggle home.
