The Little Red Bike and the Puddle
A joyful rainy-day story about splashing safely.
There was once a little red bike with a ding-ding bell and two shiny wheels. He belonged to a girl named Amara, and he was always kept spotless.
One morning, it rained and rained. When it stopped, a big, round puddle sat in the middle of the path. The sky shone in it like a mirror.
“Oh, no,” said the bike. “I will get muddy.” But Amara put on her helmet, her raincoat and her yellow boots. “Let us go slowly,” she said. “A puddle can be fun.”
Her father walked beside her. “Keep an eye on the path,” he said, “and stay where I can see you.” Amara nodded. She pedalled slowly towards the puddle.
Splish! The front wheel went in first. Splosh! The back wheel followed. A fan of water flew up on both sides like glittering wings. The bike felt a tickle in his spokes.
“Ha!” said the bike. “That was not scary at all!” He rolled out the other side, dripping and shining. Amara laughed so hard that she nearly fell off her seat.
They did it again, and again, and again. The bike’s ding-ding bell rang with every splash. By the end, he was speckled with mud from tyres to handlebars.
At home, Amara and her father washed him with a soft sponge until he gleamed. “You look wonderful,” said Amara. The little red bike smiled. He did not mind mud at all.
