The Ferry Captain’s Daughter
A story about teamwork, safety and the quiet leadership of a captain.
Pia’s father was the captain of the Marigold, a little ferry that carried cars and people across the river. Pia helped after school, tying ropes and greeting the passengers. She knew the river as well as she knew her own street.
One morning in June, the river vanished. A thick white fog had rolled in, and Pia could hardly see the bow. The ferry sat at the dock, waiting. Her father stood in the wheelhouse, looking out. “We will not cross until it lifts,” he said.
A queue of cars formed on the bank. A man tapped on the window. “I need to catch a flight,” he said. “Can we go?” Pia’s father shook his head kindly. “Not safely,” he said. “Fog hides other boats, and the shoreline. We wait.”
An hour passed. The fog thinned a little. “We can try, very slowly,” said Pia’s father. He turned to the crew. “Mateo, you are lookout at the bow. Pia, you take the horn. Short blasts every minute. Anna, watch the radar.” Everyone took their place.
The Marigold nosed into the white. Pia pressed the horn. Beeeep. The sound drifted out over the water. Mateo called from the bow, “All clear!” The engine throbbed softly. It was like moving through a cloud.
Halfway across, a low horn answered from the left. Another boat was close by. “Slow and steady,” said her father, and he steered gently to the right. A big yellow fishing boat slid past, so near that Pia could have touched it. She gulped.
“Well done, team,” said her father. “That is why we have a horn and a lookout.” Pia’s hands were shaking, but her chest was swelling with pride. They reached the far bank without a scratch. The passengers drove off, waving.
That evening, her father said, “You kept your head in the fog today.” Pia shrugged. “It was your plan.” He shook his head. “A captain’s plan only works if the crew do their jobs. You were the horn.” She smiled, and thought it was the best job on the boat.
