The Boy Who Collected Silence
A reflective story about calm, attention and listening.
Felix lived in a flat above a busy road. Trucks thundered past, horns blared, and a neighbour’s radio played all day. He loved his home, but sometimes he wished for a little peace. He wanted to collect silence, the way other children collected stamps.
He found an empty jam jar and wrote “Silence” on the lid. Then he went out to find some. First he tried the library. It was quiet, but not silent. Pages rustled, and someone coughed. He wrote in his notebook, “Library: quiet, 7 out of 10.”
Next he tried the park at sunrise. A bird was singing, and a distant mower hummed. “Park: peaceful, 8 out of 10,” he wrote. But the sound of the birds made it feel alive, not empty. He lay on the grass and listened. It was lovely.
He tried the bathroom with the door shut, and the garden shed. He tried under his blanket with a torch. He wrote down each one, with a score. He found that every place had some sound in it, however soft. Even the quietest room had the tick of a clock.
One evening, he sat on his bed, tired of searching. He closed his eyes, and listened to the traffic. At first it seemed loud. But slowly, he began to notice patterns. The trucks rumbled in a steady rhythm, like a drum. The horns were like a faraway brass band.
He breathed in, and out. His shoulders relaxed. The noise was still there, but it did not bother him. In the middle of it, he felt a stillness, a small pool of calm inside his chest. “There it is,” he whispered. “Silence.”
He opened his eyes, and looked at the jar. It was empty, of course. But he realised that he did not need to put anything in it. He could find silence whenever he sat still and paid attention. It was not a place. It was a way of listening.
He took the lid off, and placed the jar on the windowsill, open to the world. Whenever he felt overwhelmed, he sat by it for a minute, closed his eyes, and breathed. The jar reminded him that peace is a habit, and that he carried it with him.
