In English
The rare and great light that has no beginning or end: we sing of it, and still you hear and do not rise, you with the bright, wide eyes. Girl, are you still growing in sleep? Are your ears so hard? The sound of praise for the long warrior anklets of Mahadeva travelled down the streets. As soon as she heard it, another girl sobbed again and again and forgot herself, rolled out of her flower bed and came here, and lay there unable to do anything. How wonderful! This is how our friend is.
About this verse
This is the opening call. The girls stand outside a friend's house at dawn and sing of Shiva, the light with no beginning or end, and ask how she can sleep on when another friend has been overcome just by hearing his praise.
