In English

This is a call to begin a month-long vow. It is Margazhi, and the moon is full on this good day. Girls of Aayppaadi, a village rich in devotion and in cattle, who wish to bathe at dawn, come along, all you who are finely adorned. Nandagopan, who carries a sharp spear and protects the village, has a son. He is the young lion of Yashoda, whose eyes are beautiful. His body is dark as a rain cloud, his eyes are red, and his face shines like the sun and the moon together. That Narayana himself will grant us what we ask for. So come, bathe and take up the vow, so that the whole world praises us. This is Andal's invitation.

About this verse

The first verse invites the girls of the cowherd village to begin the month's vow, and says that Narayana himself will grant what they ask. Everything that follows grows out of this opening call.
