New Zealand student loan repayment calculator

Work out compulsory student loan repayments from your pay, per pay period and per year, and how long a balance would take to clear.

A guide only. Years to clear ignore interest, fees, voluntary repayments and changes in your pay. It uses the thresholds Inland Revenue lists for the 2026 tax year. Check Inland Revenue for current thresholds.

How this calculator works

Compulsory repayments are 12% of every dollar you earn above the repayment threshold for your pay period: $464 a week, $928 a fortnight or $2,010.66 a month. The threshold is $24,128 over a year.

Worked example: Inland Revenue's own example is $600 a week. That is $136 above the weekly threshold of $464, and 12% of $136 is $16.32. For $1,500 a week, the repayment is $124.32 a week, or about $6,464 a year, so a $30,000 balance would take about 4.6 years, ignoring interest.
