How to teach a child to tell the time
Begin with the hour hand and o'clock times, then add half past, quarter past and quarter to. Introduce the minute hand only when the hour is secure, and count by fives around the clock face to find the minutes.
Use a real clock at home and talk about the day: breakfast is at seven o'clock, school finishes at half past three. Let your child set the clock hands to match the time you say.
Practise on blank clock faces: you say a time, they draw the hands, then swap and read what you draw. Move on to digital times and minutes past only once the analogue clock feels easy.
