How to organise a pantry with labels

Labels turn a pantry from a pile into a system. Start by emptying one shelf, wiping it, and grouping like with like: baking, grains, tins, snacks. Decant dry goods only if you will finish them in a sensible time, and keep the packet's best-before date by cutting it out or noting it on the label.

Make labels short and consistent. Use the name as you would say it, such as plain flour, and add a date on a second line if you decant. Choose one size for each shelf so the rows look tidy, and a colour per group if it helps you find things quickly.

Print on plain paper and stick with clear tape, or use sticky label sheets. Wipe jars dry first, and leave labels off any surface that goes in the dishwasher.
