How to teach cursive handwriting step by step
Learning cursive handwriting strengthens fine motor coordination, writing speed, and reading fluency. The key to relaxed, neat cursive is comfortable body posture, paper tilted at approximately 30 degrees, and a gentle tripod pencil grip.
Use dedicated dotted mid-line paper matching the child's developmental stage (12mm for beginners, narrowing to 10mm and 8mm as letter control improves). Group letters by starting strokes—such as the clock climbers (a, c, d, g, q) and the tall loopers (b, h, k, l).
Focus on consistent letter slant and smooth baseline connections. Practise high-frequency letter joins (such as 'th', 'in', 'on') in short, pleasant five-minute intervals rather than tiring repetitive drills.
