How to measure a room for wallpaper

Wallpaper transforms a room, but running out of a discontinued batch number is a decorator's nightmare. Standard European wallpaper rolls measure 53 centimetres wide by 10.05 metres long. To find how many rolls you need, measure the total horizontal wall width and vertical drop from cornice to skirting.

The biggest trap with patterned paper is the pattern repeat. When a wallpaper has a 32 cm or 64 cm pattern repeat, each vertical drop must be aligned with the previous strip before trimming, meaning a portion of each roll is trimmed away as waste. Plain and textured papers avoid this loss.

Always purchase all required rolls in one single purchase to ensure they share the exact same manufacturer batch number. Different print runs can exhibit noticeable shade variations that stand out once dried under interior lighting.
