How to use the 50/30/20 budget method in Australia

The 50/30/20 budgeting rule, popularised by Senator Elizabeth Warren, is one of the simplest and most sustainable budgeting frameworks. Instead of tracking dozens of micro-categories, you split your net take-home pay into three clear buckets: Needs, Wants, and Savings.

Fifty percent goes toward 'Needs': rent or mortgage, utility bills, basic groceries, transport, health care, and minimum loan repayments. Thirty percent is dedicated to 'Wants': dining out, entertainment, holidays, streaming services, and personal shopping. Twenty percent is reserved for 'Savings and Extra Debt': emergency funds, super contributions, or paying off credit cards.

If rising living costs mean your fixed needs currently exceed 50%, do not abandon the framework. Temporarily adjust your targets to 60/25/15 or 70/20/10 while auditing recurring subscriptions and shopping around for better utility and insurance deals.
