Handwriting practice at home

Good handwriting grows from comfortable posture and a relaxed grip. Sit with feet flat, paper tilted slightly, and a pencil held with the thumb and first two fingers. Short sessions of five to ten minutes work better than one long one.

Use lined paper that suits the child's age: wider lines for beginners, narrower as control improves. Practise one letter shape at a time, starting at the right place, and copy a short word or sentence afterwards.

Make it meaningful. Write shopping lists, birthday cards and labels, not only exercises. Praise neatness and effort, and if hands tire or writing is painful, take a break and check with a teacher.
