EV charging cost calculator

Cost to charge an electric car at home, and cost per 100 km compared with petrol.

Off-peak or solar charging can be much cheaper. Real energy use rises at highway speeds and in cold weather.

How this calculator works

Grid energy = battery kWh × charge added ÷ (1 − losses). Cost per 100 km = energy use ÷ (1 − losses) × price.

Worked example: taking a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80% adds 36 kWh, draws 40 kWh from the grid and costs $12.00 at 30c. That adds about 225 km. That's $5.33 per 100 km, compared with $13.65 for a 7 L/100 km petrol car at $1.95.
