Argument Writing, Verbals, Voice and Mood: Grade 8 Study Guide
Strong arguments are built on evidence and are written with control of grammar.
An argument essay opens with a claim, acknowledges counterclaims, supports its reasons with relevant evidence from credible sources, uses a formal style and ends by following logically from the argument. The aim is to persuade by reasoning, not by pressure.
Verbals are verb forms used as other parts of speech: a gerund (verb + -ing used as a noun: Swimming is fun), a participle (as an adjective: the broken window, a running tap) and an infinitive (to + verb: to learn). Voice is active or passive. Mood shows the writer's attitude: indicative (facts), imperative (commands), interrogative (questions) and subjunctive (wishes or hypotheticals: If I were you…).
Verbals
| Verbal | Form | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gerund | verb + ing | noun | Reading expands the mind. |
| Participle | verb + ing / ed | adjective | The excited crowd cheered. |
| Infinitive | to + verb | noun, adjective or adverb | She wants to win. |
Voice and mood
Use the active voice to be direct (The committee approved the plan); use the passive when the doer is unknown or unimportant (The window was broken). Avoid the passive when it hides responsibility. The subjunctive uses were for hypothetical conditions: If the law were changed… and I wish I were taller.
Who acts?
Active unless there is a reason.
Fact, command or hypothetical?
Is it clear?
Building the argument
Plan with a claim, three reasons, evidence for each, a counterclaim and a rebuttal. Use transition words that show logic (consequently, however, in contrast). Cite your sources and avoid unfair attacks on the other side. In the conclusion, restate the claim in fresh words and say why it matters.
Worked example and common mistakes
Example: 'Although some argue that homework builds discipline, studies show that more than two hours a night offers little benefit and cuts into sleep.' Common mistakes: ignoring the counterclaim, dangling participles (Walking home, the rain started) and switching between active and passive in one sentence. Revise for one issue at a time.
