Life Cycles and Habitats: Grade 3 Study Guide

Every living thing is born, grows, reproduces and eventually dies. That pattern is called a life cycle.

GRADE 3 · SCIENCELife Cycles and Habitats🦋🐸🌱🌵

Plants and animals have different life cycles but each follows a pattern of change. A butterfly goes through four stages (egg, larva, pupa and adult). A frog begins as an egg, becomes a tadpole and grows into an adult. A flowering plant begins as a seed, sprouts, grows, makes flowers and then produces new seeds.

Offspring look like their parents because of inherited traits, such as the color of a bird's feathers. Other traits, like a scar or knowing how to ride a bike, come from the environment and experience.

Complete and incomplete changes

Butterflies go through complete metamorphosis because the young look very different from the adult. Grasshoppers have incomplete metamorphosis: the nymph looks like a small adult and grows by shedding its skin.

Habitats and survival

A habitat is the place where an organism finds food, water, shelter and space. A polar bear's thick fur and fat help it survive in the Arctic, but the same traits would not help in a hot desert. Organisms with traits that suit their habitat are more likely to survive and have young. If a habitat changes, some organisms may move, adapt over many generations or may not survive.

Observing a life cycle

A bean seed is a safe way to watch a life cycle.

1
Plant

Place a bean in a damp paper towel inside a clear bag.

2
Observe daily

Draw what you see: root, stem, leaves.

3
Record

Write the date and one measurement each day.

4
Compare

Compare your drawings and find the stages.

💡 Pro Tip: When you compare two life cycles, ask what is the same (they all start, grow, reproduce) and what is different (how many stages, how the young look).

Worked examples

Example 1. Sequence a frog: egg, tadpole, tadpole with legs, froglet, adult frog.

Example 2. A rabbit has white fur in a snowy habitat. The white fur is a trait that helps it hide from predators, so white rabbits survive and have young.

Example 3. Is a scar on a dog's leg inherited? No. It was caused by the environment, and scars are not passed on to puppies.

Common mistakes

Students often think animals choose to change their bodies to fit a habitat. Adaptations happen over many generations, as individuals with helpful traits survive. Another mistake is to draw life cycles as straight lines; they are cycles, because the adult makes new young and the pattern repeats. Finally, not every animal looks like its parents when young, so check each stage.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), adult butterfly. 2. Inherited: eye color. Learned from the environment: riding a bike. 3. A cactus stores water in its thick stem and has spines instead of leaves, which loses less water in the heat.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • A life cycle is the pattern of changes from birth to reproduction.
  • Some animals change completely; others grow into larger versions of themselves.
  • Inherited traits come from parents; some traits are affected by the environment.
  • Traits that fit a habitat help organisms survive.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Draw and label the four stages of a butterfly's life cycle.
  • Name one inherited trait and one trait learned from the environment.
  • How does a cactus's body help it live in the desert?
