Plural Nouns, Past Tense and Adjectives: Grade 2 Study Guide
Grade 2 grammar adds irregular forms and shows how word choice changes meaning.
Most plural nouns add s or es, but irregular plurals change: child → children, foot → feet, mouse → mice, goose → geese, man → men, tooth → teeth. Collective nouns name a group: a flock of birds, a herd of cows, a bunch of grapes.
Irregular past tense verbs do not end in -ed: go → went, eat → ate, run → ran, see → saw, buy → bought, find → found. Reflexive pronouns (myself, himself, themselves) and adjectives and adverbs also appear in Grade 2 standards.
Irregular forms to know
| Singular | Plural | Present | Past |
|---|---|---|---|
| child | children | go | went |
| foot | feet | eat | ate |
| mouse | mice | run | ran |
| man | men | see | saw |
| tooth | teeth | buy | bought |
Adjectives and adverbs
Adjectives describe nouns (a quick fox); adverbs describe verbs (the fox ran quickly). Many adverbs end in -ly, but not all (fast, well, often). Compare: 'She is a good singer. She sings well.' Good is an adjective; well is an adverb.
A noun or a verb?
Adjective for nouns, adverb for verbs.
Does it sound right?
Writing complete sentences
A complete sentence has a subject and a verb and ends with a mark. 'Running down the hill' is a fragment. 'The dog was running down the hill.' is a sentence. Use a comma in dates (May 5, 2026), in a list and in a greeting or closing of a letter. Use an apostrophe for contractions (don't) and possessives (Maya's book).
Worked examples and common mistakes
Fix: The childs seen two mouses. becomes The children saw two mice. Common mistakes: adding -s to every plural ('foots'), adding -ed to irregular verbs ('goed'), and mixing good and well. Read the sentence aloud to hear what sounds right, then check the rule.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. feet, mice, children. 2. went, bought. 3. She sings well.
