Water, the Water Cycle and Conservation: Class 5 Study Guide

Water is essential for life, but only a small fraction of Earth's water is fresh and easy to use.

CLASS 5 · EVSWater, the Water Cycle and Conservation💧☁️🌧️

Water covers most of the Earth, but most of it is salty sea water. Fresh water comes from rivers, lakes, ponds, wells, rainfall and groundwater. In India, monsoon rains are the main source of fresh water, and many people also use borewells, canals and tanks.

The water cycle keeps water moving. The Sun heats water in oceans, rivers and lakes, which turns into water vapour in a process called evaporation. As vapour rises and cools it changes back into tiny droplets, forming clouds (condensation). When the droplets become heavy, they fall as precipitation (rain, hail or snow). The water then flows into rivers and seeps into the ground, and the cycle begins again.

Stages of the water cycle

1
Evaporation

The Sun heats water; vapour rises.

2
Condensation

Vapour cools and forms clouds.

3
Precipitation

Rain, hail or snow falls.

4
Collection

Water flows to rivers, seas and the ground.

Sources and uses of water

People use water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, farming and industry. Most of the water used in India goes to farming. Water must be safe before we drink it. It can be made safer by boiling, filtering or using a water purifier. Waterborne diseases spread when drinking water is dirty.

Saving water

Many places face water shortages. Simple actions help: turn off taps while brushing, fix leaks, use a bucket instead of a shower, reuse water from washing vegetables for plants, and avoid wasting water at school. Rainwater harvesting collects rain from roofs and stores it in tanks or sends it underground to refill groundwater. Never throw rubbish into rivers and lakes.

Worked example and common mistakes

Example: A dripping tap loses a few drops each second. Over a day these add up to many litres, which is why repairs matter. Common mistakes: thinking that water is used up (it keeps cycling), confusing evaporation with condensation, and forgetting that clean water is limited. Label a diagram of the cycle to remember it.

💡 Pro Tip: Put a bowl of water in the sun and another in the shade and compare how fast each evaporates.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. Water vapour cooling and turning into tiny droplets, forming clouds. 2. For example, rivers and wells. 3. For example, fix leaks and close taps while brushing teeth.
