Forests, Wildlife and India's Seasons: Class 5 Study Guide
India has many habitats, from snowy mountains to tropical forests. Plants, animals and people depend on them.
A forest is a large area covered with trees and home to many plants and animals. Forests give us wood, fruit, medicines and fresh air, hold soil together, help bring rain and provide homes for wildlife. India has several kinds: thick, green rainforests in the Western Ghats and the north-east, forests that shed their leaves in the dry season, thorny scrub in dry regions, mangroves along the coast and conifer forests in the Himalayas.
Many animals are found in India, including tigers, elephants, Asiatic lions, one-horned rhinoceroses, peacocks and snow leopards. Some are endangered, which means few are left. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries protect them.
Forests and the animals in them
| Habitat | Where | Examples of animals |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical forest | Western Ghats, north-east | elephant, tiger, hornbill |
| Mangrove | Sundarbans | Bengal tiger, crocodile |
| Mountain forest | Himalayas | snow leopard, musk deer |
| Grassland and wetland | Kaziranga and elsewhere | one-horned rhino, swamp deer |
| Dry scrub and desert | Rajasthan | chinkara, desert fox |
Why forests are in danger
Forests are cut down for farms, roads and buildings, and for wood. When trees are cleared, animals lose their homes, soil washes away and the climate changes. We can help by planting trees, using less paper, recycling, not buying products made from endangered animals and respecting rules in parks.
Observe and name them.
Use both sides.
Water it regularly.
Keep a safe distance and do not litter.
The seasons of India
India traditionally has six seasons, each lasting about two months: spring (Vasant), summer (Grishma), monsoon (Varsha), autumn (Sharad), pre-winter (Hemant) and winter (Shishir). Many people simplify them into summer, monsoon and winter. The south-west monsoon usually brings most of the year's rain from June to September. Seasons affect crops, clothes, food and festivals.
Worked example and common mistakes
Example: Why do mangroves matter? Their roots hold the coast against waves, shelter fish and provide homes for birds. Common mistakes: thinking all forests are the same, believing that planting a tree solves everything without caring for it and assuming seasons are the same everywhere in India. Compare the weather of two cities on a map.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. For example, they give us wood and fresh air, and homes for animals. 2. The monsoon. 3. For example, the one-horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga.
