Phonics, Blends and Spelling Patterns: Year 1 Study Guide
Year 1 children build on single letter sounds to read and spell longer words.
A digraph is two letters making one sound: sh (ship), ch (chop), th (this), ck (duck) and ng (ring). A blend is two or three sounds said quickly but still heard: fl (flag), st (stop) and str (street).
Year 1 also introduces long vowel patterns. Silent e (make, bike), ai and ay (rain, play), ee and ea (feet, eat), oa (boat) and igh (light). Reading and spelling with these patterns is much easier than memorising each word.
Common patterns
| Sound | Spellings | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Long a | a_e, ai, ay | cake, rain, play |
| Long e | ee, ea | feet, eat |
| Long i | i_e, igh | bike, night |
| Long o | o_e, oa | hope, boat |
| Long u / oo | u_e, oo | cube, moon |
How to read and spell a new word
In 'train' spot tr and ai.
/tr/ /ai/ /n/
train
The train is fast.
Tricky words
Words like the, was, said, you, they, one and are do not follow the usual patterns. They are learned by sight and used often. Learn a few at a time, say them, write them and find them in books. Look for the 'tricky part': in said, 'ai' makes an /e/ sound.
Worked examples and common mistakes
Spell 'night': /n/ /igh/ /t/. Read 'chimp': ch + i + mp. Common mistakes: spelling by sound only (writing 'rane' for 'rain'), mixing up ai and ay (ai is usually in the middle, ay at the end) and forgetting the silent e. Practise with word sorts and magnetic letters.
Check your understanding: model answers
1. /b/ /oa/ /t/ gives b-oa-t. 2. sh. 3. rain (the ai pattern for long a in the middle of a word).
