Length, Time and the Calendar: Year 1 Study Guide

Children measure first with things they can hold, then learn to read the clock and calendar.

YEAR 1 · MATHSLength, Time and the Calendar📏⏰📅🧱

In Year 1, children measure length using informal units like blocks, hand spans or paper clips. They learn to place units end to end without gaps or overlaps, and to count how many fit. They also compare mass and capacity and use words such as heavier, lighter, holds more and holds less.

Children learn to tell time to the hour and half hour and to use a calendar to say the day, week and month. Time helps organise the day and plan ahead.

Measuring length

The shorter the unit, the more of them it takes. A pencil may be 18 paper clips or 6 hand-widths. Measurements only compare fairly if the same unit is used.

1
Pick a unit

A cube, a hand or a clip.

2
Start at the edge

Line up the first unit with the end.

3
Place end to end

No gaps and no overlaps.

4
Count

'About 8 cubes long.'

Telling time

The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. At o'clock, the long hand is on 12. At half past, the long hand is on 6 and the short hand is halfway between two numbers.

Days, weeks and months

There are 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year. Children order the days and months and use a calendar to say what comes before and after. Birthdays, school terms and holidays help make time meaningful. In Australia the seasons are summer, autumn, winter and spring, and summer includes Christmas.

Worked examples and common mistakes

Example: The long hand is on 12 and the short hand is on 2. It is 2 o'clock. Example: What day is two days after Monday? Wednesday. Common mistakes: confusing the two hands, reading half past 3 as '3:06', and measuring from different starting points. Use a large clock with moveable hands.

💡 Pro Tip: Ask: 'What time do we eat dinner? What day do we go to the park?' Time links to real life.

Check your understanding: model answers

1. The long hand points to 6 and the short hand sits between 7 and 8. 2. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. 3. 12 − 5 = 7 blocks longer.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Measure with equal units placed end to end.
  • Short hand = hours; long hand = minutes.
  • o'clock: long hand on 12; half past: on 6.
  • Seven days make a week; twelve months make a year.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • Show half past 7 on a clock.
  • Name the days of the week in order.
  • A snake is 12 blocks long and a worm is 5 blocks long. How much longer is the snake?
