Zoe and the Whispering Shelf
A story about finding books that matter to you.
Zoe did not like reading. The words on the page swam around like tadpoles, and she always got stuck on the long ones. At school library time, she sat at the back with a picture book and pretended to read.
One Tuesday, she wandered behind the last bookshelf, the one in the corner where nobody went. The air felt strange and soft. She heard a tiny sound, like a sigh. “Zoe,” it seemed to say. “Over here.”
She looked around. Nobody was there. Then she noticed a small book sticking out from the middle shelf, with a green spine and a silver star. It looked as if it wanted to be picked up.
She pulled it out. The cover showed a dragon, curled up asleep on a pile of books. The title was “The Dragon Who Could Not Read.” Zoe’s heart did a little skip. She opened it and began.
The dragon in the story had trouble with words, just as Zoe did. He practised every night with a candle and a very patient owl. The owl taught him to sound out each letter, and to read one line at a time with his claw underneath.
Zoe tried it too, using her finger. The words stopped swimming. She read a whole page, and then another. She read the book right to the end, and then she hugged it to her chest.
The librarian, Ms Okonkwo, came by. “I see you have found the dragon,” she said. “Many children have found him just when they needed him.” Zoe nodded. “It was like it was whispering to me,” she said.
“Perhaps it was,” said the librarian. “Or perhaps you were ready to listen.” Zoe borrowed the book and took it home. She read the dragon’s story to her little brother that night, and for the first time, the words felt like friends.
