The Honest Coin
A story about honesty, doing the right thing and the quiet pride that follows.
Jamal was walking to school with his big sister when he saw something shining in the gutter. It was a gold coin, a two-dollar one, almost new. He picked it up and turned it over in the sunshine.
“Two whole dollars!” he whispered. His mind raced. He could buy a mango ice block at the corner shop. He could save it in his jar. He could show it to his friends. Nobody was around to see.
But as he looked up, he noticed a small boy standing by the shop door, patting his pockets. The boy’s face was crumpled, and his eyes were wet. Jamal’s tummy gave a funny twist.
“What is wrong?” asked Jamal. The boy sniffled. “I lost my bus money. Mum gave me two dollars to buy a snack for school, and now it is gone.” Jamal looked at the coin in his hand. Then he looked at the boy.
He thought for a moment. The coin could have been the boy’s, or it could have been someone else’s. He did not know for sure. But there was one thing he could do. “Where did you walk from?” he asked.
“From the bus stop,” said the boy. “That way.” Jamal had found the coin in the same direction. “I think I found your coin,” he said gently, and he held it out. The boy’s eyes grew wide. “It is mine!” he said.
“Thank you!” said the boy, and he hugged the coin to his chest. His sister, who had been watching, patted Jamal’s shoulder. “That was kind,” she said. Jamal felt warm and light, as if he had swallowed a small sun.
At school, he told his teacher what had happened. She smiled, and wrote “Honesty” on the class kindness chart, next to his name. At lunch, Jamal had an ordinary sandwich, but it tasted extra good.
That night, he told his mother. “The coin was not mine,” he said. “I could have kept it, but I think giving it back was better.” His mother gave him a long hug. “Better than any ice block,” she said.
