Pebbles the Penguin and the Warm Hat
A cosy story about kindness and friendship.
Pebbles the penguin had a lovely woolly hat. It was red and white, with a bobble on top, and her grandmother had knitted it. She wore it every single day, and it kept her ears snug.
One windy afternoon, Pebbles waddled across the ice to visit her friend Pip. On the way, she passed a small, grey chick standing alone beside a rock. The chick was shivering so hard that his feathers shook.
“Hello,” said Pebbles. “Are you cold?” The chick nodded. “My mum has gone fishing, and I am freezing,” he said. His beak chattered. Pebbles looked at him for a moment.
Then she pulled off her woolly hat and put it on the chick’s head. It was too big, and it covered his eyes, but it kept his little ears warm. “There,” she said. “Is that better?”
“Much better,” said the chick. He peeked out from under the bobble and smiled. “Thank you!” Pebbles felt the wind on her ears, and they tingled with cold. But her tummy was warm and glowy.
She sat beside the chick and told him a story about a seal who learned to sing. They huddled together, and the cold did not seem so bad. Before long, the chick’s mother came back with a fat silver fish.
“Thank you for looking after my little one,” she said. She took the hat off the chick, and she gave it back to Pebbles. “It is a lovely hat,” she said. “But I think you are the warmest part of it.”
Pebbles put the hat back on. It felt warmer than before. That evening, she told her grandmother what had happened. Her grandmother smiled, and went to find her knitting needles to make a little hat for the chick.
