The hum began on a Tuesday. It was low and steady, like a distant engine. It was loudest at night, when the house was quiet, and it seemed to come from everywhere. Max lay awake, listening. He could not sleep.

“Mum,” he said at breakfast, “there is a noise in my room.” His mother listened. “I cannot hear anything,” she said. Max sighed. He knew that the hum was real. He decided to investigate, as a scientist would.

First, he listed possible sources. The fridge, the heater, the pipes, the neighbours. He turned off the heater, and the hum stayed. He put his ear against the wall, and it seemed louder. He tapped on the pipes, and listened. Nothing changed.

Next, he borrowed a cardboard tube from the wrapping paper, and held it to his ear like a stethoscope. He pointed it at different corners of the room. The sound was strongest near the window. That was odd, since there was nothing outside but the street.

He went outside with the tube, and walked along the fence. The hum was very faint. Then he noticed a small metal box on the neighbour’s wall. It was a heat pump unit, and it was running. His ears tingled. “That could be it,” he whispered.

He rang the doorbell. A kind woman called Mrs Hartley opened it. “Your heat pump hums at night,” said Max. “It might be keeping me awake.” Mrs Hartley looked surprised. “I did not know,” she said. “Let me check.”

A man from the repair company came the next day. He found that a rubber mount had worn out, so the unit vibrated against the wall. The vibrations travelled through the bricks, into Max’s room. The man fitted a new rubber mount. The hum stopped.

That night, Max lay in the silence, and smiled. He had solved the mystery by asking questions and testing his ideas. In the morning, he thanked Mrs Hartley, and she gave him a jar of homemade lemon curd.

At school, he told the class about it. “Sound is a vibration,” he said. “It can travel through solid things as well as air.” His teacher was impressed. “You have discovered resonance,” she said, and wrote the word on the board.

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Sound is made by vibrations, and it can travel through solid materials.
  • Testing one idea at a time helps us find a cause.
  • Speaking politely to a neighbour can solve a problem.

💬 Questions for Discussion & Reflection

  • How did Max search for the source of the hum?
  • What was causing it?
  • What sounds around you could you investigate?
