In English
Lines 1–5: Long live the word 'Namah Shivaya'. Long live the feet of the Lord. Long live the feet of the One who never leaves my heart for even a moment. Long live the feet of the jewel of a teacher who took me as his own at Thiruperunthurai. Long live the feet of the One who stands as the holy scriptures and draws near. Long live the feet of God, who is one and also many. Lines 6–10: Victory to the feet of the King who broke my haste and took me as his own. Victory to the anklets of the Lord with matted hair who ends birth. Victory to the flower feet of the One who is far from those without love. Victory to the feet of the Lord who delights in those who fold their hands. Victory to the feet of the glorious One who raises up those who bow their heads. Lines 11–16: Praise to the feet of the Lord. Praise to the feet of my Father. Praise to the feet of the shining one. Praise to the red feet of Shiva. Praise to the feet of the Pure One who stands within love. Praise to the feet of the King who ends the illusion of birth. Praise to the feet of our God at glorious Thiruperunthurai. Praise to the mountain of grace that gives endless bliss. Lines 17–20: Because Shiva has stood in my mind, by his grace alone I bow to his feet, and, so that my heart may rejoice and all my past deeds may come to rest, I will tell this Sivapuranam. Lines 21–25: The One with the eye on his forehead came and showed his gracious look. I bow to his beautiful feet, which no thought can reach. You fill the sky and the earth and surpass them, shining light. You are beyond counting and without limit. I, with my bad deeds, do not know how to praise your greatness. Lines 26–32: I was born as grass, as a plant, as a worm, a tree, many beasts, a bird, a snake, a stone, a human, a ghost, groups of spirits, a mighty demon, a sage and a god. In this world of things that move and things that do not, I was born in every birth and grew weary, my Lord. Truly, today I have seen your golden feet and gained release. Lines 33–40: You stand as the sound 'Om' within my heart so that I may live. True One, pure One, rider of the bull, subtle One whom the Vedas praise as 'Lord', hot and cool, Lord of all living things: you came so that all that is false would go. True flame of wisdom, joy-giving Lord for me who have no wisdom, good knowledge that removes ignorance. Lines 41–45: You have no beginning, no measure and no end. You create all the worlds, protect them, destroy them and give grace. You take me out of birth and bring me into your service. You are near and far like a fragrance, and you stand beyond word and mind. Lines 46–50: Like fresh milk, sugarcane and ghee mixed together, you stand in the thoughts of your best devotees, welling up like honey. Our Lord, who ends the births we have taken, you have five colours, and you remained hidden while the gods praised you. Lines 51–59: You came to me, who had been covered by a deceiving darkness: bound with the rope of merit and sin, wrapped in skin, covered with worms and dirt, in a hut with nine doors from which filth runs, with the five senses cheating me and a restless mind. Even so, you were kind to me, small and lacking in goodness, who yet melt with love for you. You came to earth and showed me your long anklets. Lines 60–65: You are kinder than a mother to me, who lay lower than a dog. True One, flawless light, flowering flame, shining one, nectar full of honey, Lord of Sivapuram, teacher who cuts the bond of attachment and rules. With loving grace you have shown, so that the deceit in my heart may end, Lines 66–70: great river of mercy that stands without ceasing, nectar that never satisfies, limitless Lord, light that hides in the hearts of those who do not think of you, you who melted me like water and stood as my dear life, you who have neither joy nor sorrow and yet exist. Lines 71–74: Beloved of those who love you, you who are everything and nothing, light, thick darkness, one of unseen greatness, you are the beginning, and yet you are not the end or the middle. Our Father and Lord, you drew me in and took me as your own. Lines 75–80: You are the sight that is hard to see in the minds of those who know you with sharp true knowledge, the subtle awareness that is hard to grasp. Virtuous One who has neither coming nor going nor union, my guardian who protects me, great light that is hard to see, flood of bliss, Father, shining light, subtle awareness that cannot be told. Lines 81–85: You come as knowing in the different things of the world, clear one who gives clarity, nectar that never satisfies and wells up within my thoughts, my Lord. Lying in this body of flesh with its changes, I cannot bear it, and I cry, 'My Lord, Hara, O!' Lines 86–90: Those who sat praising you, with falsehood gone and truth gained, do not return here into the birth that comes from deeds. You are able to break the bond of the hut of deceitful senses. Lord who dances in the deep of night, dancer in Thillai, Lord of the southern Pandya land, Lines 91–95: You who cut away the birth of suffering, crying 'O!' to the One who is hard to speak of: those who understand the meaning of this song, said at his feet, and say it, will dwell in Sivapuram, under the feet of Shiva, glorious and bowed to by many.
