Waist-to-height ratio calculator

Check your waist-to-height ratio, a simple measure of central body fat.

A screening guide for adults, not a diagnosis. See a GP for personal advice.

How this calculator works

Ratio = waist ÷ height. The UK's NICE guidance (2022) suggests keeping your waist to less than half your height, and uses 0.5 and 0.6 as the boundaries for increased and high risk.

Worked example: an 86 cm waist at 178 cm tall gives 0.48, just inside the healthy range. The waist to stay under is 89 cm. Measure halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone.
