Stair riser and going calculator

Work out the number of steps, riser height and going for a staircase, and check them against common NCC limits.

A planning aid only. Check the current NCC Housing Provisions and your building certifier, especially for balustrades, landings and non-slip treads.

How this calculator works

Risers = total rise ÷ target riser, rounded to a whole number. Then the actual riser = total rise ÷ risers, so every step is identical. There's one fewer going than risers, because the top floor acts as the last tread. The NCC limits for stairs in houses are risers of 115–190 mm, goings of 240–355 mm and a 2R + G of 550–700 mm.

Worked example: a 2,700 mm rise with a 175 mm target gives 15 risers of 180 mm, 14 goings of 250 mm (a 3,500 mm run) and 2R + G = 610 mm. That's within the limits.
