TV and screen size calculator
Width and height from a screen's diagonal, plus a suggested viewing distance.
Viewing distances are comfort guidelines. Sharper 4K screens can be viewed from closer.
How this calculator works
Width = diagonal × aspect width ÷ √(aw² + ah²). The viewing distances are where the screen fills about 30° or 40° of your view. Those are the widely used SMPTE and THX cinema guidelines.
Worked example: a 55-inch 16:9 TV is 121.8 × 68.5 cm, which suggests sitting about 1.7 m (immersive) to 2.3 m (relaxed) away.
