About this kite printable

Keeping a log turns kite flying into a small science project. Children note the wind using a simple guide based on the Beaufort scale, which describes wind by what you can see, such as leaves rustling or small branches moving, and then rate how their kite flew. After a few outings they can look for patterns: which kite likes a light breeze and which needs a stronger one. The safety checklist covers the main rules, including staying well away from power lines and never flying in a storm.

Tips

Common questions

What is the Beaufort scale?
A way of describing wind by what it does, from calm to hurricane. The wind guide uses five of its levels with their wind speeds in km/h.

What is the best wind for flying a kite?
Most kites fly well in a gentle to moderate breeze. Very light kites can fly in a light breeze, and it is best to stop when small trees start to sway.
